GENETIC IMPROVEMENT OF OILSEED PLANTS
The main research objectives are the development of new germplasm of oil crops with improved characteristics using different methodologies and the introduction of new crops for biofuel production. The traits to be improved include, resistance to sunflower bolting, oil quality for different applications in the food and non-food industry in different species (sunflower, safflower, rapeseed, castor) and meal quality in brassicas. Oil quality traits are new fatty acid profiles, including high and low levels of saturated fatty acids, oleic acid and erucic acid, as well as total content and profile of tocopherols and phytosterols. The development of the variability of these traits is complemented by genetic studies.
